Our bodies are breathing every second.
Breathing releases our energy, creates rhythm and music; breathing
drives us to move and to create dance. Breathing is the ultimate force
of life, yet it can also take lives away by spreading illnesses. The
first cry of a baby is his or her first breath, which is a crucial test
he or she has to overcome so as to stay alive. Breathing is where
everything begins! From the first cry when we leave our mother’s womb
to our last breath, ‘breathing’ is a basic activity that accompanies
every minute of our lives.
Air and Breath was first performed in Bergen (Norway) in the
‘Oktoberdans’ Festival as a site-specific dance. I used limited
resources to present Air and Breath, using duvets and elastics to wrap
around my bodies, rolling on the street and every movement is initiated
by simple breathing. Air and Breath is:
A life like thing that breathes
An amorphous thing
A thing that is neither male nor female
A thing that has no distinct skin colour
A thing that does not know how to move according to urban human signage
A sculpture that moves
A….
Air and Breath is a performance in public space. After the first
performance in Norway it was then invited to perform in Dresden
(Germany) in 2001 and Beijing (China) in 2005. This will be our first
time to perform Air and Breath in Hong kong and later in Bytom
(Poland).
